Resolution or DPI of your designs
Your design’s resolution refers to how many pixels are displayed on screen or how much ink is used in a print. If you need to create a design with a certain DPI, this refers to resolution as well (DPI stands for “dots per inch”). In Fusion, we only adhere to 300 DPI as per print standards.
Specifications of the print-ready file
As mentioned on our website, we offer yearbook printing in Europe, Australia, New-Zealand (A4 format). The print-ready files have the same specifications:
- High resolution PDF (including all linked images and fonts)
- 300 dpi
- 5mm bleed
- Margin 15mm
- Crops marks
- Text not outline
Crop marks and bleed
01. Crop marks
On your PDF proof, these are the little marks at the 4 corners your pages. The purpose of these marks is to tell the machine where to cut the pages to give your book the exact size you need (the original sheets being bigger to fit multiple pages). As there are crop marks on each side of each page, the cut is done in 4 times.
In general, patterns and backgrounds go beyond the crop marks. In fact, this is encouraged to make sure you don't have a white margin on the edges of your pages. This is what bleed is made for.
Bleed is the (5mm) area around the perimeter of your page (beyond the crop marks). As this area will be cut-off during the trimming process, having colours or photos in it is recommended if you don't want your page to have a white margin on the edges. The Fusion Yearbooks Online System takes the guesswork out of your design, as all the pages automatically have the bleed & crop marks added.
Pre-press is the stage of production process which takes place after you approve your yearbook to print.
01. What's included in the Pre-Press?
- Making sure the pages are in the right order (and are evenly corresponding)
- Making sure there are no display bugs after the PDF generation (unexpected overlapping elements, problems withs fonts, etc.).
If we fix anything, we'll require you to review your updated yearbook and re-approve it for print.
02. What's not included in the Pre-Press?
- Repositioning important elements on pages within the 'Danger Zone'.
- Repositioning any elements that are overlapping.
- Repositioning any misaligned images (unless caused by an error in our system).
- Checking clarity of any text by adjusting contrast between the text or background.
- Checking grammar, spelling, inappropriate content and anything related to the content.
=> These things are under your responsibility, not ours.
You can have a choice between a gloss or matte celloglaze.
Stock or paper used by Fusion
We use silk art paper - it’s somewhere halfway between gloss and matte.
With silk, it has the best of both worlds: great colour, shine and touch!
To get more technical, the stock we use is around 150gsm in thickness. This is around the quality you’d expect from a photobook or high-end magazine. We print our yearbook covers on a 350gsm stock. For a rough comparison, it's slightly thicker than a postcard.
Lastly, being part of the printing industry, we are aware of the importance of being environmentally sustainable with our printed products. And in relation to that, we only use FSC - Forestry Stewardship Commission plantation papers with a 100% recyclable content, 100% ECF Chlorine Free and carbon neutral stocks with and ISO14001 accreditation. All our printers are green stamp certified. Your books will be printed on either recycled or plantation sourced papers with petroleum free inks.
What is GSM
The phrase 'GSM' can be defined as grams per square meter. It is used to measure the weight & thickness of a paper stock. Thicker papers will have a higher gsm count and are generally more durable and sturdy in comparison to papers with a low gsm count. Fusion Yearbooks soft cover books are typically printed with 150gsm inside pages and 350gsm covers.
